A: First Speciality Board in USA & AAO Evolution

* ABO (American Board of Ophthalmology) was the ftrst medical specialty board in the United States.

* In response to a growing call by Academy members for better education of specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Oto-laryngology appointed committees in 1913 to study and recommend plans for setting standards in graduate education. Through these committees the AAOO helped to create the American Board of Ophthalmology in cooperation With the American Ophthalmological Society and the American Medical Association. Established in 1916, the ABO was the ftrst medical specialty board in the United States.

Over the next few years educational standards were clarified and it became obvious to the leaders of the AAOO that they needed to provide more instruction to their members. Therefore in 1921 the six-day Annual Meeting was split with the first three days devoted to the meeting and the second three days devoted to post-graduate instruction. In this way the Academy pioneered the concept of formal instruction courses which is a cornerstone of continuing medical education today.
